Kerala seafood trail: An excursion to Vypeen Harbour and Cherai Beach

What this tour is about: Kerala is known for its delicious coastal cuisine. In this tour, we visit a large fishing harbour to see the morning catch come in, and to learn about the rich marine life in this part of India. Later, we visit a nearby beach to enjoy a seafood lunch and spend some time relaxing at the beach.

How it works: We will pick you up from your hotel at 9:00 a.m. and head to the wharf to join the locals as they take the ferry to Vypeen Island. It is a short ferry ride, about 5-10 minutes, although there may be a 20-minute or so wait for the ferry.

Once we disembark we will drive 45 mins through Vypeen island to reach Munambam fishing harbour. Munambam is an estuary where a branch of Periyar river, after joining the Chalakudy and Pullut rivers, meets the Arabian Sea. When we reach there, the morning catch will be coming in, and you can watch the loading-unloading as well as the traditional auction process. Our guides will explain the fishing seasons and the various types of catch that you see.

After the harbour visit, we will drive about 15 mins to the popular Cherai Beach, where we will have lunch at a seafood restaurant. After lunch, you can relax for a while at Cherai beach, and then return to the hotel.

If you are staying in Ernakulam, you can choose to drive back. If you are in Fort Kochi, it is quicker to take the ferry back.
